Goyang Special City has taken its first step towards becoming a global educational special zone by attracting King’s College School (hereinafter referred to as King’s), a prestigious private school from the UK, to establish an international school.
On the 7th, Mayor Lee Dong-hwan announced that an agreement (MOU) was signed with King’s to establish a foreign educational institution within the Goyang Economic Free Zone.
In February, Mayor Lee was designated as a pilot area for educational development by the Ministry of Education, with plans to create a globally representative educational special zone and a Northeast Asian educational hub in Goyang City, by establishing schools for the gifted, science high schools, international schools, and global campuses.
After several months of efforts, including sending a letter of request to the main campus of King’s, the King’s Foundation Board of Directors approved the proposal.
Founded in 1829 by King George IV of England, King’s is part of the Eton Group, renowned for its academic achievements and considered one of the best schools in the UK.
King’s consistently ranks among the top 1-2 private schools in the UK and is well-known as one of the top five prestigious schools among 5,700 International Baccalaureate (IB) educational institutions in 170 countries worldwide.
The IB education program is gaining attention globally as an educational program for nurturing global talents required in the Fourth Industrial Age. Recently, education superintendents nationwide are adopting IB education as an alternative to public education, especially as international universities recognize IB scores as a globally accredited college entrance examination.
The establishment of King’s in Goyang City is expected to enhance the appeal of high-quality education among both local and foreign parents and students, thus promoting foreign investment and significantly contributing to the creation of a premium global school district.
Goyang City is seeing notable success in attracting domestic and foreign corporate investments and is poised to be designated as an economic free zone this year.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan stated, “Attracting corporations and developing educational infrastructure are inseparable, and we will strive to create living conditions for foreigners to invigorate investment in the Goyang Economic Free Zone, aiming to develop Goyang City into a sustainable luxury city by providing excellent jobs and an educational environment.”
