Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City signed an agreement (MOU) with the prestigious British private school King's College School (hereinafter referred to as King's) on May 7th to establish a foreign educational institution within the Goyang Economic Free Zone.
This result came after months of vigorous efforts by Mayor Lee Dong-hwan, who sent letters of invitation to the main King’s campus, eventually securing approval from the King’s Board.
According to BIEK (represented in Korea by Joseph Choi), which is handling the establishment of King's International School, "Empowered by Mayor Lee’s strong initiative to attract the school, we are now progressing to attract world-renowned universities following the successful attraction of an international elementary, middle, and high school. Goyang City is expected to become a premier education city."
In February, Goyang City was designated as a pilot region for educational development by the Ministry of Education, and is actively pursuing the establishment of a global educational district and Northeast Asia educational hub with the creation of schools for the gifted, science high schools, international schools, and global campuses, with the goal of representing South Korea.
King's, established in 1829 by King George IV of the United Kingdom, is part of the Eton Group, known for its academic achievements among the top prestigious schools in the UK.
King's is consistently ranked among the top 1-2 private schools in the UK and is a prestigious school that ranks fifth globally among 5,700 International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in 170 countries.
The IB program is globally recognized as an education program for fostering global talent required in the Fourth Industrial Age, and is being adopted as an alternative to public education by national and provincial superintendents of education in Korea. IB scores are also recognized by universities worldwide as an internationally accredited university entrance exam.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan stated, “Attracting businesses and developing educational infrastructure are inseparably linked. In order to invigorate investment in the Goyang Economic Free Zone, we are committed to improving conditions for foreign residents and creating excellent jobs and educational environments to develop Goyang City into a sustainable, high-quality city.”
